About the book

During the Mad Hatter Masquerade, a fundraising event organized by the Friends of the Opera at the historic Pendleton Grist Mill, a tragic incident occurred. Harlan Sadler, the husband of Cricket Sadler, who was the chairwoman of the event, was found dead. He had been struck in the head with a croquet mallet and his body was left hanging on the chains and paddles of the grist mill. The shocking part was that Harlan was well-liked by everyone, leaving people puzzled about the motive behind the murder.

After much confusion, Cricket and Delaine turned to Theodosia for help in solving the mystery. It was speculated that the killer might have mistaken Harlan for his troubled son, Duke, who had a reputation as a slum landlord and was recently involved in a boating incident that resulted in a woman being injured. The investigation took an unexpected turn as Theodosia delved deeper into the case.
