About the book
Librarian Lucy’s new historic house is filled with a lot of baggage and family secrets, which may lead to a killer bringing her family to their downfall in the 9th Lighthouse Library mystery.
Spring has arrived in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Lucy and Connor have finally settled into their new home, a historic cottage on Nags Head Beach. While the house requires numerous renovations, they have worked diligently throughout the winter to prepare it for living. Lucy is happily focused on her duties at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, planning her upcoming wedding, and decorating their new home. However, their peaceful abode is disrupted when a dead body is discovered.
One night, when Lucy is alone in the house with Charles the library cat, she hears strange noises. Upon investigation, they find footsteps in the dusty living room and an open door leading outside. The history of the house being haunted resurfaces, as it is said that the teenage daughter of the previous owners disappeared forty years ago without returning.
Ultimately, they discover that the sounds have a human origin when they stumble upon a dead man in their kitchen one evening. Unfamiliar with the deceased, Lucy and Connor realize he has a connection to their house that spans years. Lucy is compelled to uncover the events of the past and understand how they are endangering her present happiness.
Meanwhile, the Classic Novel Reading Club is delving into Nathanial Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables, a tale about another ancient dwelling harboring hidden secrets. Will Lucy be able to draw parallels between Hawthorne’s narrative and her own circumstances in time to prevent further tragedy?
