About the book
Librarian Lucy Richardson discovers a mysterious map from the Civil War era. Without cracking its code, she may be in danger of becoming history herself.
Meanwhile, The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Book Club is engrossed in reading Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne as workers repair the library's foundations. The excavation is interrupted when Lucy uncovers a tin box containing a diary from the Civil War, along with a map of the Outer Banks written in code.
The library is abuzz with excitement as people flock to see the artifact. However, the next morning, Lucy and Connor McNeil stumble upon the body of Jeremy Hughes, a member of the historical society, inside the library. It becomes evident that Jeremy was not the only intruder--the map and code page are missing.
Lucy's rival, Louise Jane McKaughnan, admits to entering the library after hours but denies any involvement in Jeremy's murder. As secrets from Charlene's past with Jeremy come to light, Lucy reluctantly gets involved in the investigation. The library staff and community are consumed by decoding the mysterious page, but a second break-in suggests someone is determined to solve the code at any cost.
