Delaney Nichols is certain that she is following her passion, as evidenced by the fact that just a day after returning from her amazing honeymoon in Europe, she is excited to return to the Cracked Spine, the bookstore where she is employed. However, as she gets off her bus and rushes towards the shop, she accidentally collides with another woman, causing the books the woman is carrying to fall to the ground.

The woman, named Mary, is Delaney's unfortunate victim, and both women can't help but notice that they look remarkably alike. Mary points out that they also bear a striking resemblance to Mary Queen of Scots, who was famously beheaded. Adding to the oddity, Mary believes she is the reincarnation of the Scottish queen. Despite the strange encounter with her doppelganger, Delaney doesn't have much time to dwell on it. Upon reaching the bookstore, she discovers that the Edinburgh city council is planning to shut down the Cracked Spine due to code violations, and she is determined to prevent it.

However, things take a dark turn when Mary's husband dies in a car explosion, and Delaney learns that he was the council member who suggested investigating the bookstore's structure. This revelation makes her question if her meeting with Mary was mere coincidence. Edinburgh is now as full of mystery and deceit as any royal court in Europe, and Delaney is resolved to unravel this enigmatic royal puzzle.
