Just minutes after receiving the news that President Nelson has been found dead in the White House on Thanksgiving, Vice President Nick Cappuano and Lt. Sam Holland are still trying to process the fact that Nick has been asked to take the oath of office.

As they navigate through the necessary steps for a smooth transition of power, Sam is filled with countless worries about her husband, her family, the Nelson family, the country, and the immense responsibilities that Nick is about to shoulder. Amidst all these concerns, she also wonders about her own job. Being a first lady with a job outside of the White House has never been done before, but she is determined to break new ground for future generations.

However, she soon realizes that sacrifices will need to be made in order for her to continue her work as a Homicide detective. Their lives spiral into chaos with a flurry of meetings, interview requests, challenging questions from their children, and numerous obstacles to navigate as they transition from the second family to the first family.

An unexpected complication arises with a diplomatic trip to Iran, throwing Nick into the deep end of his new duties while Sam delves into a murder investigation with connections to a cold case from fifteen years ago. Amidst the whirlwind around them, Sam and Nick find solace in each other, relying on their unbreakable bond to weather the storm.
