About the book

In 1890, the initial Japanese diplomatic delegation arrived in London for the opening of an embassy. Private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker, who sometimes worked for the Foreign Service Office, was asked to show his personal Japanese garden to the important visitors.

Later that evening, Ambassador Toda was shot and killed in his office while Barker was found nearby, holding a revolver with one bullet fired.

Special Branch arrested Barker for the murder, but he was eventually released with the help of his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, and his lawyer. Despite the police's belief in his guilt, Barker was hired by the new Japanese ambassador to uncover the true killer.
