Private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker has faced many challenges—he's been attacked by assassins, his office has been bombed, and evil-doers have even tried to harm his dog. However, he has never had a potential client drop dead in his office before. When Member of Parliament Roland Fitzhugh enters to consult Barker and Llewelyn, he suddenly falls dead to the floor. It is revealed that he was poisoned with a cyanide-laced raspberry tart, which also killed an entire family in the East End. Dubbed the Mad Pie Man by the press, Barker and Llewelyn are hired by former Prime Minister William Gladstone to uncover the culprit targeting the House of Commons's latest member.

Before they can start their investigation, they become the latest victims of the poisoner—with Barker's butler poisoned and traps set in their home. Forced to flee from their unknown enemy, Barker and Llewelyn must unravel the connections between the seemingly random attacks and prevent further deaths among their loved ones and allies.
