In 1894, London's premier enquiry agent, Cyrus Barker, finds himself caught up in a plot to resurrect the American Civil War involving influential individuals who were thought to have passed away long ago.

Cyrus Barker, a private enquiry agent, has a distinguished track record along with his partner Thomas Llewelyn. Over the years, he has handled cases for Scotland Yard, the Foreign Office, and even the crown with exceptional skill and discretion. However, none of those cases compare to the complexity and sensitivity of the task presented to him by a group of men who had fought for the Confederacy three decades earlier. These men aim to bring back the Confederacy using a warship promised to them by the British Government in 1865. To acquire it now, they are using the threat of exposing a confidential treaty with the Confederacy. Barker is hired to leverage his connections to discreetly convey their ultimatum to the Prime Minister.

With a network of influential, albeit covert, supporters scattered across England ready to lend their backing to reignite conflict with the United States, the delegates are on standby for the arrival of the warship to set their scheme in motion. However, some of the men have hidden agendas, and the American government has their own operatives on standby, waiting for the opportune moment to intervene.

As tensions escalate in this volatile situation, Barker and Llewelyn must work to uncover the true identities and intentions of these perilous individuals.
