Daphne has always cherished the way her fiancé Peter recounted their story. From their chance meeting on a blustery day to falling in love over an errant hat, and finally settling down in his lakeside hometown to build a life together. He had a gift for storytelling...until the moment he realized his heart belonged to his childhood best friend Petra.

And so, Daphne finds herself in the picturesque Waning Bay, Michigan, alone without familiar faces but with a job as a children’s librarian that barely covers her expenses. She decides to room with Petra’s ex, the scruffy and chaotic Miles Nowak, who takes comfort in heartbreak ballads and is the complete opposite of the organized Daphne. Her coworkers know little about her, even speculating that she might be FBI or in witness protection. The roommates keep their distance until they form a fragile friendship one night while drowning their sorrows.

They come up with a plan, which includes misleading photos of their summer adventures together. But is it all just a facade? Will Daphne really find herself falling for her ex-fiancé’s former best friend, Miles?
