When Helen Honeycutt falls in love with Emmet Justice, a charming television journalist who recently lost his wife in a tragic accident, their sudden marriage creates tension between him and his long-time friends, who are not pleased with Helen's presence in their close-knit group. To try to heal the rift, the couple decides to spend the summer at his late wife's family home in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. Helen is captivated by the small town and its residents, as well as Moonrise, the Victorian mansion of Emmet's late wife with its neglected but unique nocturnal gardens. Despite her efforts to fit in, Helen realizes she can never truly replace the woman before her. It becomes clear that someone is determined to drive her away, but the reasons behind it remain a mystery. As Emmet becomes more distant, Helen turns to the other members of the group for support, only to discover that she can't trust anyone. When she uncovers the truth about her predecessor's death, Helen must decide whether she can ever trust - or love - again.
