Keith reluctantly came to Hathaway House at the urging of his sister. He had given up hope of finding a future worth having, despite her insistence otherwise. He believed he was too weak for the journey, the treatment, and the plans the team had for him. He felt broken beyond repair, and doubted that anyone could help him.

Despite his protests, no one seemed to listen to Keith. Not the doctors, not his sister, and especially not the small woman who brought him coffee at 5:00 a.m.

Ilse, the head chef at Hathaway House, rarely left the safety of her kitchen. Dealing with groceries and staff was easier than facing the pain of the residents. However, something about Keith and his vulnerability touched her heart. She went out of her way to ensure he was well taken care of, even knowing she was crossing a professional boundary.

Although it may not have been in her best interest, Ilse put Keith's well-being above her own. She believed that his needs mattered more than anything else.
