For ninety-one years, a postcard has waited at the post office to reach Joe Tournier. On its face is an image of a lighthouse - Eilean Mor, located in the Outer Hebrides.

Joe has never departed from England, not even from London. He is a British captive, one of numerous under the control of the French Empire. He has a profession, a spouse, an infant daughter.

Yet, he also experiences fragments of a past he can't remember and of a realm that never was - a realm where English is used in England, not French.
