In the midst of a harsh Michigan winter, remnants of a snowmobile are discovered near the deteriorating town of Starvation Lake -- the same snowmobile that sank with the renowned hockey coach from Starvation years ago. Despite the common belief that Coach Blackburn's tragic accident occurred five miles away on a different lake, the evidence from the snowmobile points to one thing: murder.

Gus Carpenter, the editor of the local newspaper, has recently returned to Starvation following a failed endeavor at the Detroit Times. In his earlier years, Gus was the goalie who let a state championship slip through his fingers, shattering Coach's aspirations and earning the town's resentment. Now, he is delving into the murder of his former coach. However, what truly unsettles Gus are the gaps in the town's history and the lingering suspicion that within those voids lie some ominous and concealed secrets -- secrets that certain individuals close to him may have committed murder to protect.
