About the book
In 1862, Maggie Chadwick is a well-known performer at the Hippodrome Music Hall in Lancashire, a once-grand venue now catering mainly to the lower classes. She is married to Fred, her domineering manager.
When Fred is found strangled backstage, Inspector Halliwell begins an investigation.
Edouard Deschanel, a Frenchman, has arrived in the north of England to open a high-end department store. Customers are drawn to this new shopping experience.
Edouard is appalled by the mistreatment Maggie suffers at the hands of Fred. A confrontation between the two men is witnessed by several people. Halliwell soon discovers that Deschanel has a potential motive for the murder. However, Maggie herself also has a reason to want Fred dead.
Fueled by a desire for self-preservation, Edouard and Maggie team up to unveil the killer's identity.
