In Bethany, Vermont, it's currently mud season. With the arrival of spring, the thawing ground and melting snow have turned the roads into muddy, impassable messes. It's a common sight to see drivers either pushing their cars or seeking help. However, a car with Pennsylvania plates has been left abandoned, still stuck in the mud.

Alice Bellows, a curious widow who seems to be well-informed about everything happening in town, can't help but ponder what could have driven someone to desert their vehicle in such a manner. Inside the car, only two suitcases remain in the trunk, with no sign of registration or keys. While the authorities show little interest in the situation, Alice suspects there's more to the story. Uncertain of what she may uncover or who might be at risk, she decides to embark on a quest to locate the car's owner and unravel the mysteries they conceal in her quaint town.
