Description
Thrillers are known for their fast-paced plots, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must overcome powerful and well-equipped villains. These stories often use literary devices such as suspense, red herrings, and cliffhangers to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Though thrillers often overlap with mysteries, they are distinguished by their plot structure. In a thriller, the hero’s mission is to thwart the plans of an enemy, rather than simply solve a crime that has already taken place. Thrillers also tend to have higher stakes, involving large-scale threats like serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the toppling of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are standard in these plots. While a mystery reaches its climax when the mystery is solved, a thriller reaches its peak when the hero finally defeats the villain, saving themselves and often many others.
