Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge is facing one of the most challenging cases of his career: a murder investigation with an unidentified victim and very few leads.

A woman has been found dead near a megalith in Avebury, a village within a stone circle close to Stonehenge. Chief Inspector Brian Leslie is unable to determine her identity or the circumstances of her death. The killer has left no evidence behind.

When Rutledge is asked to re-examine the case, he suspects a ploy by Chief Superintendent Markham to set him up for failure. Avebury continues to hide its secrets, but Rutledge uncovers a clue that leads to a surprising revelation. Pursuing this lead could either vindicate him or ruin his career.

With pressure from the Yard mounting, Rutledge must decide where his loyalties lie and what he owes to the victim. The easy choice is to leave the case unsolved, but Rutledge is determined to uncover the truth.
