About the book
It is the year 1915, and the Great War has just begun. Lieutenant Ian Rutledge has abandoned his position at Scotland Yard to serve in France. Currently, he is working with the sappers, who are tasked with digging underground tunnels towards the German front lines in order to detonate explosives beneath the enemy trenches. In Rutledge's sector, the charges fail to detonate after they are set, prompting Rutledge and Private Williams to bravely return to the tunnel to investigate. Despite the danger, they manage to escape just before the explosion.
Rutledge suspects that the failure was caused by Welsh miners Taffy Jones and Aaron Lloyd, despite their denials. To make matters worse, Williams reveals that the two men have previously attempted to kill him, showing a disregard for the lives of their fellow soldiers. As the war rages on, Rutledge uncovers a sinister plot and must find a way to expose the truth behind the attempted murder in the midst of the chaos of battle.
