About the book
There were three individuals who witnessed the rape and murder of Amanda Boudreau, during which the fingerprints of small-time hustler Tee Bobby Hulin were discovered at the scene of the crime. Dave Robicheaux believes in Tee Bobby's innocence, and despite Tee Bobby's pleas and attempted suicide while in custody, Dave remains convinced of his innocence.
Tee Bobby is eventually released on bail, but shortly thereafter, another murder occurs. When lawyer Perry LaSalle takes on Tee Bobby's defense, Dave suspects that Perry's motivations are driven by guilt. This suspicion arises from the fact that Tee Bobby's grandmother was seduced by Perry's grandfather, and the death of Amanda Boudreau is tied to events that transpired long before Tee Bobby was even born.
